We Want More!

As I stand here, I take in my surroundings. Noisy, busy, crowded. The constant chitter of the room fill my ears and the swarms of people make me claustrophobic. Smack...smack...smack--the person next to me already started eating in line. He was talking--no yelling--to his friend standing next to him, leaving no time to close his mouth while chewing. I glare and turn to Brett. We both gave one other an exasperated look and pushed through the mass. Finally...FOOD. As we look through the minimal choices, I become less and less hungry. Third lunch is the worst. Slim pickings. Left-over meat, stale bread, and rotten fruit. Nothing looked good which didn't matter because nearly everything was gone. As a gluten/dairy free individual, our lunch provides little to no options for me to choose from. Everyday, I must pack a lunch. Big deal, right? Oh wow, Teresa, you're life is so hard you have smear some peanut butter on bread and put two slices together. I know I might be sounding a bit dramatic, but it becomes tedidious packing those lunches. What happens if I wake up late and don't have time? It's my fault, and I'll just have to deal, right? Or what if I forget my lunch at home and my mom can't bring it up? I'm outta luck. I mean if I was allowed to leave campus for lunch this blog would not be neccessary. If I was allowed to go pick up food, I would have no problem with the scanty choices and soiled food. Unfortunately, that's not the case at Fort Zumwalt East. Instead, I live with the constant disappointment of bias choices in an allergy unfriendly environment. I'm asking for a change in the anti-allergy lunch menu. Choices for all! Then finally, instead of just taking in my surroundings and leaving the lunch line disappointed, I'll be able to purchase a food that suits my lifestyle choice.

  1. Oh my goodness Theresa, I can relate to your feelings about leaving the lunch line disappointed. Everyday I go up into the line starving, and come back having zero hunger. I also have third lunch. I'm sure it's crappy not having food that you are able to eat.

  2. Teresa, I know how you feel about third lunch since I had it all my sophomore year. However, the lunch at first lunch is not at all any better. Still the "stale bread", "rotten fruit", and "left-over meat" that you get. I think it's just all together the "healthy" food the school chooses to serve us every day. You make EXCELLENT points in your post and I wish someone like the superintendent would read it so maybe we could get something done about it.

  4. Agreed one-hundred percent! I think even though its too late to do anything abvout it now, because we will be gone soon, the lunch menu needs to change. That or they should allow off campus lunches. They really shopuld have more options, some healthy food, some maybe not so healthy. Some food for kids with allergies, but not all of it. We are and high school now and if you have an allergy you should be able to pick out what foods you can and cant eat. Good job Teresa!

  5. Teresa, I never have really thought about it from that kind of standpoint. I think it is an awesome point though. I do hate how they do not have much option to eat and I think that they should make some of the food for gluten free people because I know more than one person here that is gluten free.
